When playing as a mage in Skyrim, the obvious guild to join is the College of Winterhold. However, for an institution of its caliber, the College itself doesn't seem very impressive. There's plenty of work that can be done to spruce things up from an immersion standpoint.
Skyrim Mage Guild Overhaull
The main objective of this guild is to gather mages who have no sort of affiliation with the College of Winterhold and wish to remain like this, but still wish to form part of an organization that gathers magical talent in the lands.
Based in the northern most city of Winterhold, these have you helping a guild of mages and, as such, helps to have some magick-skills at hand. You'll have to interact with this faction as part of the main story, but you can obviously ignore it and join at your own request.
Dark Lore Grimoire is part of my Skyrim Upgrade and represents a massive upgrade to the Skyrim Mage Game. Not only does it take all the default spells and unlock them according to your magic skills in each school instead of your character level, which does not care if your a mage or not, but it adds various magic guilds and orders to the game and revamps the College of Winterhold too. With this mod installed, Solitude will be one of your favourite towns in Skyrim.... instead of the least visited.

Formari are composed of individuals who focus on using their talents to create various items, most notably enchantments. Some Formari also create and sell herbal items such as potions. The Tranquil belong to this group and do all of the enchanting on behalf of the Circle, as working with raw lyrium poses too high a risk to mages whose connection to the Fade isn't severed.[29] They are less a political organization and more akin to a tradesmen's guild. Owain and Solivitus are both examples of Formari. Formari have more contact with the outside world than other mages and as such maintain trading posts and trade houses in major cities and settlements in order to conduct business for the Circle.[30] An example of such a trade house would be the Wonders of Thedas in Denerim. 2ff7e9595c
